Frequently Asked Questions

What is reiki?
Reiki is an ancient method of healing illness and reducing stress through touch or, often enough, hand positions that stop short of touching. The word reiki comes from two Japanese words, rei, meaning higher power or supernatural force, and ki, meaning life energy. Loosely translated, reiki means universal or spiritually guided life-force energy.

How does reiki work?
Reiki is based on the theory that unseen energy, ki, flows through all living things along pathways in the body called "meridians." When the flow of ki is blocked or disrupted by negative thoughts or energy, serious health and emotional problems can result. A reiki practitioner channels energy by gently putting her hands on or near the body in several specific positions. These positions mirror the pathways that carry the ki energy to major organs. The flow of positive reiki energy from practitioner to patient is thought to heal ailments by correcting imbalances and restoring the healthy dynamics of the person's life force.

What is a reiki session like?
The practitioner welcomes you, asks you to fill out a few details and will then explain the process and if the client has any health issues, that is discussed also. The client then lies up on the plinth, usually on their backs, and the practioner places their hands either on or above different parts of the client’s body and channels healing. This can be felt as heat or cold or perhaps nothing different at all, but the reiki always works, regardless of the experience the client has. Reiki is intelligent, that is the healing goes where it is needed, and the client allows what is ready to heal, to heal. There is no belief system around reiki, or religious or spiritual leaning, so it works regardless of whether one believes or not. However some people can be particularly open to it.

What ailments respond to reiki treatment?
It is possible for all emotional and physical ailments to respond to reiki.

Is it safe?
Yes Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-invasive form of healing, which assists the body's natural ability to heal itself and is an exceptional complementary method of healing.
